Helping Yellowknife lace up and hit the ice since 1968.

From learning to skate to building confidence on the ice, we welcome skaters of all ages and experience levels.

About Us

The Yellowknife Skating Club (YKSC) has been part of the community for over 50 years, helping skaters of all ages learn new skills, build confidence, and have fun on the ice. Founded on December 11, 1968, by passionate locals, including Yellowknife legends Mickey Brown and Ruth Spence. Our club has deep roots and a strong Northern spirit.

We’re a Skate Canada–sanctioned, non-profit club powered by certified coaches, enthusiastic Program Assistants, and a whole lot of amazing volunteers. Whether you're stepping on the ice for the very first time or working toward performance goals, we’re here to support your journey.

Our season runs from September to April and includes programs for every stage and style of skating:

  • Pre-CanSkate & CanSkate – a fun, safe intro to skating for beginners
  • Advanced CanSkate & STAR Prep – for skaters ready to build on their basics
  • STARSkate – for those developing figure skating skills and routines
  • Adult Learn to Skate – because it’s never too late to start
  • Special Olympics – supporting skaters with intellectual disabilities in a positive, inclusive environment

Our volunteer Board of Directors works behind the scenes to keep the Club thriving, and we count on the support of our skating families to make it all happen. Board meetings are open to all members, and we host our Annual General Meeting (AGM) every fall. Want to get involved? We’d love to have you on board!

Important Reminder About Communication

Email is the only way we share club updates, schedule changes, and important announcements.
Messages are sent to the email address on your Uplifter account, so please be sure it’s one you check regularly.
We do not send paper handouts or make phone calls.
As a volunteer-run club, we rely on email and online tools to keep things organized and efficient.
Follow us on social media for updates, reminders, and fun throughout the season.
If you're not receiving emails, please reach out, we’re happy to help get things sorted!
