Pre-CanSkate
Who It’s For
Pre-CanSkate is for children aged 3 and up who are brand new to skating or are still learning basic movement on the ice. It is ideal for skaters who are not yet ready for the full CanSkate program, including those learning to stand independently, balance on their skates, and become comfortable moving forward.
Program Structure
Pre-CanSkate is taught in a supportive group lesson environment with smaller groups of skaters. Skaters participate together in short, fun-based activities and circuits that focus on building confidence, balance, and comfort on the ice.
Sessions are led by NCCP-certified coaches with support from trained Program Assistants. Coaches and Program Assistants provide guidance and encouragement throughout the group activities while helping skaters progress at their own pace.
Key Skills Developed
- Standing up and balancing on skates
- Marching forward and beginning to glide
- Falling down and getting up safely
- Beginning to move in different directions
Progress Recognition
Skaters are introduced to the Balance, Control, and Agility ribbons and may begin earning them as they demonstrate the required skills. Skaters also receive a Skate Canada progress report card at the end of the season.
Equipment
Skaters need:
- Properly fitted hockey or figure skates
- CSA-approved hockey helmet
- Warm, flexible clothing that allows movement

CanSkate
Who It’s For
CanSkate is designed for skaters aged 5 and up, as well as younger skaters who have mastered the Pre-CanSkate skills. It is ideal for children who can move independently on the ice and are ready to continue developing their balance, control, and agility.
Program Structure
CanSkate is a group lesson program with six progressive stages. Skaters are grouped by skill level and rotate together through fun, fast-paced activity stations and circuits.
Sessions are led by NCCP-certified coaches with support from trained Program Assistants. Each session includes a group warm-up, skill rotations, and a group cool-down, all set to music and delivered in an upbeat and engaging environment.
Although skaters participate in group lessons, they progress through the CanSkate stages based on their own skill development.
Key Skills Developed
- Forward and backward skating
- One-foot glides and stops
- Turns and edges
- Speed and agility
- Basic spins and introductory jumps in the higher stages
Progress Recognition
Skaters work toward earning three ribbons—Balance, Control, and Agility—at each stage. Once all three ribbons are completed, the skater receives the corresponding Stage Badge for Stages 1 through 6.
Skaters also receive a Skate Canada progress report card at the end of the season.
