Skate Canada Policies

As a proud member of Skate Canada, the Yellowknife Skating Club follows all national policies and standards designed to ensure safety, inclusivity,
and excellence in sport. Below are key policies families should be familiar with:
 

Safe Sport Program

Skate Canada’s Safe Sport program is a national initiative designed to ensure a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all participants—on and off the ice. 
Key components include:

  • Abuse, harassment, and discrimination prevention

  • Mandatory screening and background checks for coaches and volunteers

  • Clear reporting mechanisms and confidential support

All coaches, board members, and on-ice program assistants affiliated with the Yellowknife Skating Club are required to complete Skate Canada’s Safe Sport Training, which includes:

  • Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders

  • Safe Sport education modules

  • Regular updates and re-certification as required by Skate Canada

We are committed to upholding these standards and creating a space where every skater can learn, grow, and feel safe.

Privacy Code

Skate Canada is committed to safeguarding the personal information of all members in accordance with national privacy legislation. The Privacy Code outlines how personal data is collected, used, and protected.
This applies to all information submitted during registration, including names, birthdates, medical details, and contact information. Information is only used for purposes related to Skate Canada programming and will not be shared without consent.

Code of Conduct & Parent Expectations

At the Yellowknife Skating Club, we follow the Skate Canada Code of Ethics, which sets the standard for respectful, safe, and supportive conduct for all participants—skaters, coaches, parents, officials, and volunteers.
As part of this commitment, all families are expected to:

  • Support a positive and encouraging environment for all skaters

  • Treat coaches, volunteers, other skaters, and fellow parents with respect

  • Communicate calmly and constructively—questions and concerns should be directed to the club through appropriate channels

  • Ensure your skater arrives on time, with proper equipment and ready to participate

  • Stay informed by reading club emails and updates

  • Celebrate effort, personal growth, and sportsmanship over competition

Unacceptable behavior—including verbal abuse, harassment, or bullying—will not be tolerated and may result in disciplinary action under Skate Canada’s Safe Sport policies.

Yellowknife Skating Club Policies

In addition to national Skate Canada policies, the Yellowknife Skating Club has its own guidelines to ensure smooth operations, consistent communication,
and a positive environment for all members. These local policies apply to all skaters and families participating in our programs.
 

Volunteer Commitments

As a volunteer-run club, we rely on parent involvement to make events, performances, and fundraising successful.
  • Families may be asked to help with ice shows, CanSkate days, or competitions throughout the year.
  • Volunteer sign-ups will be shared via email and on the club website.
  • We appreciate your time and support. It directly benefits your child’s experience!

Photography & Media

Photos and videos may be taken at club events, shows, or during programming for promotional purposes.
  • These may be used on the club’s website, social media, posters, or newsletters.
  • If you do not consent to your child’s image being used, please email the club in writing at the start of the season.

 

 

 

Important Reminder About Communication

Email is the only way we share club updates, schedule changes, and important announcements.
Messages are sent to the email address on your Uplifter account, so please be sure it’s one you check regularly.
We do not send paper handouts or make phone calls.
As a volunteer-run club, we rely on email and online tools to keep things organized and efficient.
